collaborative workshop paves way for kerikeri’s future | AUGUST 2023

Adding to our recent update on public housing initiatives by Kāinga Ora, a momentous occasion transpired recently that promises to be a cornerstone in shaping the future of Kerikeri.

In a bid to truly understand and collaboratively decide on the future of Kerikeri, a full-day workshop was conducted, organised by our friends at Vision Kerikeri. This wasn't just any regular gathering; it brought together a diverse set of stakeholders - community groups, Kāinga Ora representatives, Council Engagement staff, and local developers. The agenda was clear and comprehensive: delve deep into the history of Kerikeri, understand its evolution, discuss the diverse submissions for the Proposed District Plan, and, most crucially, envision the future of Kerikeri through multiple lenses.

Given the broad spectrum of participants, it was inevitable for differences of opinion to emerge. These differences, instead of becoming points of contention, served as platforms for richer dialogues. It highlighted that Kerikeri, holds unique significance for each stakeholder, but the vision for its future can only materialize through cooperative efforts.

A unanimous conclusion from the workshop was the recognition of collaboration as a robust tool. Participants acknowledged that working synergistically would yield a higher probability of success, as opposed to isolated or conflicting approaches.

For years, community voices have emphasized the crucial role the Council plays in determining Kerikeri's direction. They've consistently highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Council, the community, and vital stakeholders for effective planning. This workshop echoed these feelings, with unanimous agreement on the pressing need for structured planning.

At its core, this workshop transcended a mere day's conversation; it showcased the immense potential of communication, partnership, and collective aspirations. Kerikeri, teetering on the edge of significant transformations, relies on these unified endeavours to chart its path. While stakeholders unite in purpose, it remains to be seen if the Council, represented only by Engagement staff at the workshop, will step up to its crucial role.
