Guy Holroyd | Interim FNDC CEO

hopes dashed at FNDC meeting | august 2023

In a recent gathering anticipated to bridge the gap between the community and the council, outcomes were a blend of optimism and unexpected challenges. Local community groups were invited by the newly appointed Interim CEO of the Far North District Council (FNDC) for a dialogue aimed at understanding the community’s aspirations for meaningful and collaborative urban planning. [To know more about our perspective, read our letter to the Interim CEO prior to this meeting.]

While the community has been championing for an inclusive town planning approach, the CEO displayed a genuine interest in listening and understanding. However, some members of the Council Planning staff appeared to be on a different page. As the community pushed for clearer alignment, understanding and urgency to Kerikeri’s planning, they frequently encountered the staff's perspectives and interpretations. The staff, despite being newly appointed and not having firsthand experience with past events and agreements, often challenged the community's recounting of those occurrences.

The revelation of the Council’s plans for a spatial plan “reset” - a project that was initiated in October 2021 - brought forth more questions than answers.

Exiting the meeting, it was clear that there's work ahead. The community’s aim is to move beyond being mere spectators to being valued partners in shaping the town's trajectory.

The meeting was a follow-on from an introductory letter sent to the CEO outlining the community needs, thinking, work, expertise and next steps. You can read the letter below
